My 11-year-old
worries about Hannah Montana,
Webkinz and Abercrombie clothes. No bill payment,
job or relationship concerns haunt her.
There are things I equate with February that will never, for
as long as I stand on this earth, be voided from my memory. I will never forget
gingerly opening every 5th grade valentine in hopes it might be from
Brandon, the
boy I was sooo in love with. Finally, the bottom of my homemade tin foil and
construction paper laden box yielded my greatest treasure. It read, “Be mine,
Valentine.” –Brandon.
I’ll always remember the magician dressed like Abe Lincoln that would visit my
elementary school. Every February he performed his magic tricks then hand out
these completely delicious and irresistible red lollipops. I have never been
able to detect a duplicate taste on my tongue. They had to be magical… Every
second of February I celebrate Kenny Robert’s birthday and wonder what that kid
from my freshman Algebra class is doing.
My memories are a bit distorted, in
that they were seen through the imagination-stricken eyes of a child. A cherry
sucker has been morphed into this ideal, Willy Wonkaized, supernatural sugar
stick. Kenny was the guy who would make fun of me every day in math and to be
honest, I don’t even remember Brandon’s
last name.
Childhood is a great time to be
alive. My 11-year-old worries about Hannah Montana, Webkinz and Abercrombie
clothes. No bill payment, job or relationship concerns haunt her. And, though
there probably aren’t any magicians dressed like Honest Abe visiting the
tri-state any time soon, there are still some fab Feb activities.

The Super Scientific Circus, starring Mr. Fish and Trent the
Mime, proves that science can be fun and funny. Alternately assisted and foiled
by the comedic antics of Trent the Mime, Mr. Fish uses amazing circus skills
involving boomerangs, bubbles, beach balls, bull whips, and magic to introduce
the principles of friction, inertia, centripetal force, aerodynamics, sonic
booms, air pressure, and ultraviolet light.
