Svet OW Shogun.jpgDinner and a show! Not only can you enjoy the city’s best sushi at Shoguns of Japan, behind Wal-Mart on Frederica, you can also see some crazy bottle flipping. Svetoslav Yanachokov, a 27-year-old Brescia college student, and former Bulgarian bottle-flipping champion captivates audiences and diners with his synchronized and freestyle flipping. Check him out at our website on www.news4uowensboro.com. You’ll swear you are staring right at Tom Cruise in Cocktail!

N4U: How long have you been working at Shoguns?

Svet: A year and a half; I have lived in the US for three and a half years.

How did you start bartending?

I started working in Bulgaria. I began flipping bottles there for competition.

Do you like it here?

It’s okay. Owensboro is kind of boring.

Why are you here in the ‘boro?

I am a student at Brescia, studying Business Management.

What’s your favorite drink to make?

Anything that gives me an opportunity to flip bottles.

What do you drink?

Black Bush Irish Whiskey.

Will you bartend New Year’s Eve?

No, I’d rather go and celebrate!

What was your best tip ever?

I don’t really know. In Bulgaria, we count at the end of the night and it was nothing to make 200 or 300% tips but here it’s more like 20 or 30% gratuity. We count at the end of the night.

Do you plan on staying in Owensboro when you graduate?

No, I’ll probably move to a bigger city.

What’s your bartender pet peeve?

I’m working for everyone not just one person.

What do you love about bartending?

I like it, it’s just for me. It’s fun, not like a real job and you get to meet people.

What’s your bartender tip or trick?

To have fun and enjoy it.

Do you get hit on a lot?

Not really, I don’t show interest because I have a girlfriend.

Do you have any great regulars?

Some. I know what they drink and they always ask about school.

What’s great about Shoguns?

I like it. It’s different for me. I’m used to working at nightclubs, but since I’m in school I needed something that didn’t go late into the night. It’s a different experience. I love learning about sushi!

“I am the last barman poet. I see America drinking the fabulous cocktails I make. Americans getting stinky on something I stir or shake. The sex on the beach, the schnapps made from peach, the velvet hammer, the Alabama slammer. I make things with juice and froth, the pink squirrel, the three-toed sloth. I make drinks so sweet and snazzy, the iced tea, the kamikaze, the orgasm, the death spasm, the Singapore sling, the ding-a-ling. America you've just been devoted to every flavor I got; but if you want to get loaded, why don't you just order a shot? Bar is open.” -Cocktail
